The iconic opening animation of Persona 3 that plays every time you boot up the game features various translations of the phrase Memento Mori. It particularly holds on the translation "remember that you will die", for reasons that every Persona fan knows by now.

The game outright tells you from the beginning exactly how the story will end.

As the story progresses, the player sits and waits for that Sword of Damocles to finally drop, until they get to the final battle against the goddess, Nyx. Realizing that it's impossible to truly kill Nyx, protagonist Makoto instead chooses to sacrifice his own life to become the great seal that can hold Nyx for all eternity.

Makoto is given just enough time to reach his graduation ceremony, where he slips out the back to go relax on the roof and, well, wait for the end.

Makoto has one last touching moment with the android Aigis, who tells him that the others are all on their way. With that final assurance, Makoto closes his eyes and drifts away.
