Set in the midst of a war with the Covenant, Halo 3 sees the full destructive powers of the alien coalition brought to Earth itself. Halo 3 was a powerful journey, seeing the Master Chief reconnect with Cortana before being trapped, drifting into dark space.

This was the last time that gamers would see with Bungie, and they were going to make it as emotional as possible. While impressive on its own, the true majesty of this soundtrack occurs when it is viewed on the menu screen itself.

Mixing strings with soft piano elements, the theme adds to the utter devastation seen on the screen, making the entire situation seem hopeless from the outset. With a brief choral piece at the beginning harking back to the first game, players of the series are reminded of how far they have come with the Master Chief.

There's no crescendo, no beating drums in this - as there has been in other themes in the series - just the strings slowly rising and falling. It's a poignant, sad ending to the Bungie trilogy.
