With SEGA breathing down their necks with the Megadrive - which was doing a great job of impressing gamers - Nintendo really needed to pull something special out of the bag with their SNES. They already knew that the console was able to offer a little more than SEGA's machine in the power stakes, but that wouldn't mean a thing if it didn't have the games to back it up.

It's no surprise that the company turned to their most successful creation to draw back those who were tempted by SEGA, but Super Mario World wasn't just a case of using a familiar name to generate sales. Instead, it stands as one of the most meticulously crafted and perfectly balanced 2D platformers of all time.

With Super Mario World Nintendo announced the SNES with a bang so large that SEGA were practically relegated to runners-up the second it was released.

The game is a common fixture on "Best of All Time" lists and with damned good reason. Super Mario World is a game of such quality that it is simply astounding that it was one of the console's launch titles.

Of course, Nintendo would go one better in the next generation...
