While Nintendo can lay a legitimate claim to having created the best 2D platformer of all time in Super Mario World, they knew that 2D simply wouldn't cut it in the next generation.

With the PlayStation managing to gain an ever-strengthening foothold in the industry, it was time for Nintendo to work their magic on their little plumber and create a game that would have players chomping at the bit to get an N64 and play it.

The result was Super Mario 64, which even so many years later would have to be included in the discussion for best game of all time. This was Nintendo at their absolute finest, doing what no other company had really been able to pull off before while seamlessly transferring one of their most beloved icons into an entirely new dimension.

While the company ended up behind the PlayStation in that generation's console war, in Super Mario 64 they had created a game of such unbridled quality that it was almost impossible for anybody else to top it on the N64.

For two successive generations Nintendo's big killer apps had arrived at the same time as their console. That's a rarity in this industry the likes of which will probably never happen again.
