Though Dogmeat can't hold a conversation with the player, he is their unremittingly loyal aide throughout the franchise - though technically each iteration of Dogmeat is a different dog - keeping them company across the Wasteland.

Sure, he can only be so helpful in combat, but his ability to sniff out items and enemies in the vicinity makes him tremendously valuable in addition to being, well, one hell of a handsome, charming canine.
