1. Destiny
Destiny has kind of floated up and down in my estimation since it was first announced. The new franchise from the Halo creators Bungie is full of fascinating possibility. Set on the last city on earth, you play as a Guardian, one of the protectors of the city, which is under threat from alien invaders. The story is nothing revolutionary, but the tools to explore that world seem to be. The game is an FPS with a connected world, thus allowing players to run around and meet one another on this earth.. For a game that is basically made up as a matchmaking MMO, it is perhaps some what shocking that Destiny was the prettiest game I saw at the show. The lighting effects were fantastic and Bungie took some time to show me how gorgeous just looking at the vistas could be. For a game of this graphical capability it is strange to be using words like public events and loot. While Destiny isn't strictly an MMO, it seems to pull in all that is great about the genre without getting all the drudgery. Marrying the best aspects like massive worlds, many players, public events and customisation and marrying it with AAA standard FPS action is a seriously impressive feat and one I am gagging to jump into. It is an incredibly smart combination of genres and one Destiny could really reap rewards from. Destiny is looking like a franchise 'destined' for excellence. We of course are only talking previews here but if Bungie can deliever on most of their promises, they have me sold. E3 had hundreds of games and I saw a fair portion of the ones you might consider 'forerunners', and I have few reservations about giving Destiny a top five place on my list. I just hope Bungie deliver, so I don't look like an idiot. Pressure's on Bungie.
