Following the success of their video game adaptation of The Two Towers, EA released The Return Of The King in the following year.

Like its predecessor, Return Of The King is a hack-and-slash action game that sees players fight their way through iconic moments from the movie, unlocking powerful combos as they progressed. While the core gameplay remained the same and was just as entertaining as before, the developers expanded upon this title in numerous ways.

Whereas The Two Towers was strictly linear, Return Of The King's campaign featured three distinct pathways. One followed Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, while the others centred on Gandalf's journey and Sam and Frodo's perilous quest to destroy The One Ring.

Not only were there more characters to play as this time, but the levels themselves were much bigger than before and contained more enemies to battle. More impressively, the inclusion of interactive environments meant that players could throw spears, tip over cauldrons, and fire catapults to destroy siege towers.

With the addition of co-op, players could even experience this game with a friend. It's no surprise that this is regarded as being one of the best movie tie-in games ever made.
