4. Day Of The Tentacle

The Adventure:

Having pulled off some sterling work on previous titles, the powers that be at LucasArts gave Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman the lead in creating their own title. Released in the summer of 1995 to universal acclaim, Day Of The Tentacle cemented the talents of these two individuals. Story-wise, this sequel to 1987's Maniac Mansion saw Bernard Bernoulli drag his pals Hoagie and Laverne back to where it all started and into the slithering path of one dastardly purple tentacle. Before long, the three leads get thrown back and forward in time via the returning Dr Edison and his whizzy portaloos. Never frustrating on difficulty and featuring some groundbreaking gaming firsts - players could access a computer and actually play Maniac Mansion in its entirely - Schafer and the good folks at his Double Fine Productions outfit are so aware of the game's enduring legacy, that they're busy working on a special edition of the game, which is poised to be released very soon.

Puzzling Par Excellence:

Dr Fred has been awake for eons but in order to crack the code to unlock his safe its imperative that he takes forty winks and goes sleep walking. This calls for a trip to the kitchen to snatch some decaff and pull of a switcheroo with the rocket fuel that's been keeping the good doctor awake all this time. But, in the great tradition of adventure gaming, this just opens up an even bigger puzzle.
