10 Best Rockstar Games Protagonists - Ranked
1. Arthur Morgan
For a long time John Marston was the benchmark for video game protagonists, particularly from Rockstar Games. It seemed a difficult task for Rockstar to outdo itself with Red Dead Redemption 2 and give us a new protagonist to care about. However it not only bested John Marston, it created the greatest video game character of all time.
Much like John, Arthur begins his journey as a no-nonsense character with seemingly no real backstory. By the end of the game however, Arthur is the most well-rounded character in the game and we know lots about his life. We know his father was not a good man, we know both his parents died when he was quite young, we know he had a woman and a child, both of whom were killed, we know he has borderline unwavering loyalty to Dutch, and he often doubts his actions.
Arthur gradually opens up and when we do learn about chunks of his past it feels like a natural progression for the character. He's a man facing his own mortality and reflecting on his life, which hasn't panned out the way he had hoped. It's a true story of redemption and self-reflection that is both heart-breaking and full of hope.
Arthur's story is unlike anything else in gaming, and no other character could be the linchpin. Roger Clark's portrayal of the character is both moving and unforgettable, particularly in the final meeting with a certain nun.
Take a bow Arthur, and especially voice actor Roger Clark.
