10 Best Silent Protagonists In Gaming History
2. Link (The Legend Of Zelda)
The Zelda games are some of the most iconic and enduring gaming franchises ever, led by silent hero Link. He’s gone through several redesigns in his time, but through them all he’s hardly said more than a grunt.
The hero of Hyrule is one of the most recognisable characters around, with even the most casual of casual gamers aware of his impact on the genre. Most recently, Breath Of The Wild pushed all sorts of boundaries, but even as it brought in more characters and a bigger role for Zelda than ever before, Link remained tight lipped.
Still, as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch it helped get a firm foothold for Nintendo’s new flagship console before the likes of Super Mario Odyssey, Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee and Super Smash Bros Ultimate joined the party.
Link’s been a major hitter for Nintendo for a long, long time though, first launching in 1986. Although many point to Breath Of The Wild as his best ever, others have a place in their heart for the likes of Ocarina Of Time or Majora’s Mask.
One thing’s for sure though: whichever one your favourite is, it won’t be for Link’s sparkling conversation.
