10 Best Silent Protagonists In Gaming History

3. Crash (Crash Bandicoot)

GTA III
Vicarious Visions

Crash Bandicoot is in the midst of a stellar revival right now, after the success of the N Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled. A ‘90s star whose stock had faded almost into obscurity, the last few years have been very kind to him.

With both of those being remakes (the former of the glorious original trilogy and the latter a mash up of the two more successful kart racers), Crash will need a great truly new game before he’s officially back, but right now the future looks very bright indeed.

A rival to the witty and talkative Spyro, Crash never said anything more than ‘WHOA!’ through his halcyon days, and so it’s remained in his renaissance. Though the game itself does have an (often nonsensical) story, the main narrative weight has been carried by his sister Coco or his protective mask Aku Aku. The villains are far more chatty, with Cortex, Uka Uka, N Gin and the rest also prone to monologuing.

Crash does excel however when it comes to facial expressions and dance moves, as well as having some of the most entertaining death animations in gaming. He doesn’t need dialogue to be massively over the top.
