RPGs aren't exactly known for being light on story. In fact, the masses of text that players will need to navigate just so they can understand what on Earth is going on is one of the main draws towards the genre and has allowed for the creation of some of the richest tales in gaming history.
Silent protagonists are a rarity is the point being made here.
Featuring a vast world full of richly developed characters and plenty of main party interaction, you would expect the main protagonist of Square's excellent Chrono Trigger to have an awful lot to say for himself.
Instead, he stays quiet throughout the story, gradually building a party of powerful warriors while travelling through time in an effort to stop Lavos and bring peace to his time.
The fact that he sees so many different eras and can travel through time in the first place should be enough to elicit something out of Crono. Instead, he just takes on the biggest threat in the world without ever opening his mouth, outside of the occasional selected dialogue option by the player.
