10 Best Skill-Check Bosses In Gaming History

6. Matador (Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne)

final fantasy 16 Benedikta Harman boss fight
Atlus

If the previous boss was all about making the player feel cool, this one is about reminding them of their ignorance.

Seconds after the fight against Shin Megami Tensei III's Matador begins, you'll likely leap to the conclusion that you've wandered into an unwinnable fight. You know the kind - where a massively overleveled boss obliterates your party, you get saved by a deus ex machina, and hours later you have the rematch to get your win back.

That... doesn't happen here. Matador is just that good, and now you have to be that much better.

Before this fight, it's entirely possible to get by in SMT III through doing nothing fancier than healing your party when their health gets too low. Matador, however, is a roadblock that's impossible to pass unless you learn the ins and outs of how to buff your party - specifically, their Evasion stat.

Matador's attacks hit so hard that the only way to win is to ensure they don't hit you. As such, you need to buff your party's Evasion, while simultaneously lowering the skeletal sod's Accuracy to ensure he misses more than he hits.

Matador is a timely reminder to familiarize yourself with the intricacies of SMT III's combat, and by the time he falls you'll be far better equipped to deal with the remainder of ATLUS' extraordinarily tough RPG.
