2. Salt And Sanctuary
Ska studios' tiny team of husband and wife nailed the soulsborne genre on the head in 2016 with the release of Salt and Sanctuary. Taking the usual formula and putting it entirely in a 2D platformer setting, mixing in some metroidvania elements of gating certain areas behind learning special moves, and resulting in a charming little package with sporadically surprising difficulty.
Featuring the most giant, intimidating skill tree you've ever seen, build your character down one or more of four available paths - strength, dexterity, magic, or prayer - and scour the cursed land searching for a way off the island you have found yourself shipwrecked upon.
Featuring delightfully obscure, and at times terrifying (looking at you, creepy crucified chap) world lore, players will need to pledge themselves to a covenant in order to set up sancturies as checkpoints along their journey. You can summon various helpful NPCs to your sancturies that will help you upgrade and manage your skills.
Did I mention the game has a double jump? Because it has a double jump. A Dark Souls game with a double jump. It's brilliant.
