10 Best Video Game Characters Of The New Generation
1. Riley Abel - Last Of Us: Left Behind

We recently had The Last of Us top the site's best PS4 games list due to its Remastered version being released this year on PS4, but in terms of content almost the entirety of that package was unveiled last year. All of it except the Left Behind DLC that is; a downloadable pack that tells the story alluded to at the very end of the original LoU where Ellie mentions that she lost a close friend to the virus that's ravaging their world.
Riley is this person, and although you never get to play as her, a large chunk of the DLC sees you as Ellie deciding to play around together in an abandoned mall for one last time, before the inevitable horrors that await come crashing down upon them both. It's a total change of pace and tone from what you've previously experienced with Joel as you fought for survival, as instead you partake in all manner of things to break away from the otherwise constantly-dour nature of the game's universe such as a water-pistol fight, taking pictures in a photobooth and reading through a hilariously-written pun book, among many others.
There's a heap of dialogue recorded between both Ellie and Riley that alludes to their time together before the events of the DLC - covered in the American Dreams comic - that it just makes you wish she could stick around for the duration, but as with the UFC-style gut-punch that was the opening of LoU, so to does Left Behind have some emotional heavyweight-haymakers tucked away in its runtime.
It doesn't stop your time with Riley shining a whole new light on Ellie as a result though, making her an incredibly valuable companion and further fleshing out the backstory of everyone's favourite curse word-flinging female.
