10 Best Video Game Documentaries Of All Time
3. Man Vs Snake: The Long And Twisted Tale Of Nibbler
Released: 24 June 2016
Ever played a video game for two consecutive days? That’s what Tim McVey must do to have any hope of taking back the high score on Nibbler. Whereas many video game documentaries make you want to play the games on which they are based, this showcase of snakes and mazes will make you want to run in the opposite direction. Achieving over 1 billion points on Nibbler is an exceptionally gruelling activity and requires a tremendous amount of skill, patience and willpower.
The documentary isn’t gruelling to sit through however, and is an enjoyable 93 minute watch. There is high production value throughout and slick animations are used to story parts of Tim McVey’s journey. Billy Mitchell and Walter Day have become staples of arcade documentaries and make appearances alongside a fun cast of colourful characters. There is no critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes yet but the film does hold 89% based on 9 reviews and has an audience score of 75%.
Man vs Snake is available to rent on YouTube and Google Play for £1.50 in the UK and can be bought for £5.49 on Amazon. Check the same (or similar) platforms for availability in other countries as well as manvssnake.com.
