10 Best Video Game Documentaries Of All Time

2. Indie Game: The Movie

Released: 20 January 2012

Indie Game: The Movie is a fascinating look into the struggles and triumphs of independent video game developers. Specifically, it follows those responsible for Super Meat Boy, Fez and Braid.

At the time of filming, Braid had successfully launched, Super Meat Boy was launching and Fez was stuck in development hell. This gave three different windows into the independent game development process framed as past, present and future. You follow the subjects on a roller-coaster ride of emotions, but the documentary is probably most captivating when you see them succeed.

Premiering at Sundance, Indie Game won the World Cinema Documentary Editing Award. The 103 minute documentary also holds an approval rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes (from 31 reviews), with an audience score of 91%. If you are a Amazon Prime user in the US or UK this one is free, otherwise you can rent it for £5.49 ($3.99 US) or buy for £6.99 ($5.99 US).
