Console releases are always a big deal but the arrival of the Switch 2 had a lot of additional reasons why it was the big talking point of 2025.

For one thing, the PS5 and Xbox Series X arriving during the pandemic (and supply chain issues) had made for muted and strange launches. Furthermore, the original Switch had been on the market for 8 years - far longer than the traditional Nintendo console.

Of course, leaks throughout the year meant we all knew sort of what to expect anyway but Nintendo kept us waiting months on end. However, the Nintendo Direct in April that did a deep dive into the Switch 2’s specs and features was also stuffed with a bunch of exciting ports and teases for the future, and many fans felt like it had been worth the wait.

Unfortunately, the glow of the Switch 2 reveal wore off fast when Nintendo quietly announced the prices for the system and several of its first-party games online after the fact… and they weren’t cheap. 

Further Nintendo streams had their livechats dominated by those calling to reduce the price, but considering the Switch 2 is selling well it seems that ship might have sailed.

Whilst economic factors were always going to cause all console manufacturers to raise their prices, Nintendo just so happened to be first and many saw that as giving its competitors the go-ahead to do the same.
