Whatever you might think of it, it’s impossible not to talk about the last ten years and not mention Fortnite.

You all know the story by now: responding to the growing success of Player Unknown Battlegrounds, the devs at Epic Games’ retooled their existing “Save The World” game and released a battle royale mode. Beating PUBG to consoles and being free-to-play, cross-play and a shooter without much of a violent aesthetic made it a bonafide hit.

Adding in the dopamine of spending your hard-earned V-Bucks on chasing a particular skin made Fortnite addictive on top of just how satisfying it was to get a headshot and then hit the griddy,

And then the brand deals started rolling in, and Fortnite’s cultural significance grew as it became home to almost any possible crossover you could think of; starting with Marvel and John Wick and then expanding to include Mortal Kombat, Family Guy, Disney and Saw all stood side-by-side just to name a few.

Despite being a free-to-play game, Fortnite makes billions of dollars every year. And whilst many scoffed at it early on, it’s maintained a grip on gaming for almost a decade. It’s still one of the most played games in the world. There are thousands of people who don’t play video games, they just play Fortnite.
