10 Biggest Recent Fan Critic Divides In Video Games
7. Diablo II: Resurrected
Originally released in 2000, Diablo II was instantly received as a classic for developer Blizzard Entertainment - one of the last non-controversial games for the once universally celebrated studio. When they released Diablo II: Resurrected - a substantial remaster of the influential game - the reaction was far from history repeating itself.
Resurrected has an 80 critic score on Metacritic - hewing closely to the original's 88, especially keeping in mind there were fewer review outlets back then. Critics applauded its adherence to the original's overall design and mechanics, modern quality of life improvements (such as automatically collecting coins from the ground), and controller support.
Unfortunately, reviewers had a very different experience before the game's launch than fans did on day one.
Resurrected was riddled with compatibility issues, bugs, and poor performance. But the big issues were the inability of the servers to handle the player load.
A company as big as Blizzard should have been better prepared - especially as they removed alternative methods of playing the game, forcing players to rely on their servers.
After the dust settled, the damage was done, with Resurrected's Metacritic user score sitting at a paltry 3.1.
