6. World Of WarCraft: Shadowlands

To be fair, most World Of Warcraft expansions are divisive enough to earn a spot on this list. Its latest, however - Shadowlands - represents a high point of fan-based spite for the legacy MMO.

Critics, confusingly, simultaneously praised the series' ability to reinvent itself, yet also remain familiar. They loved the overall art and design of the new Shadowlands zones, while also pointing out that its new factions felt generic. They loved the nostalgia of encountering dead characters in the afterlife, but admitted that new characters were bland.

Somehow, this mixed bag still resulted in a Metacritic score of 83.

But they especially praised the 2004 game's ability to remain relevant - something players couldn't have disagreed with more, afflicting the new expansion with a miserable 2.8 user score.

Fans were underwhelmed by the new zones and characters, frustrated with the franchise's increasingly convoluted lore, and overall bored with the WoW formula. More surprising was the frustration with the continued segregation of races and factions, with many Metacritic user reviews accusing Blizzard of racism.

Overall, the fan sentiment seems to be that it's beyond time for a proper sequel to the nearly twenty-year old game.
