8. Pathologic 2

The original Pathologic was such a niche title that it doesn't even have a critic score on Metacritic. Pathologic 2, however, was big enough to gain wider critical attention, and controversial enough that the name is recognizable even to gamers who don't normally play survival games.

Like many such niche, hardcore survival games, Pathologic 2 isn't the most polished title in the world. And critics were right to point out that it is often buggy and suffers from performance issues. However, they were also quick to cite its demanding survival mechanics, punishing difficulty, and generally exhausting gameplay, resulting in a Metacritic score of 70.

But developer Ice Pick Lodge have said as much - that Pathologic 2 is designed to test your limits - thereby forcing you into all kinds of morally questionable positions. And you're supposed to die a lot.

Fans understood this, awarding the game an average score of 8.8 on Metacritic, many reviews praising the very same mechanics that critics derided.

Regardless of its design, the measure of a game should be whether it not it accomplishes what it sets out to do. If that's not a game you want to play, then it simply isn't for you, and maybe you shouldn't be reviewing it.
