5. Sonic Frontiers

One thing about Sonic fans is that they really, really like Sonic. Even the borderline-unplayable Sonic '06 has its defenders.

Sonic Frontiers, however, is different.

For the first time in a long time, developer Sonic Team attempted to bring the series into the modern area. For a character whose whole appeal is speed, it makes sense to drop him into vast, semi-open environments, balancing classic Sonic platforming with opportunities to go all in on speed, without any abrupt stops.

With a 71 critic score on Metacritic, Frontiers is the best-received Sonic game in more than a minute. And while reviewers praised its new direction, they were pretty hard on its level design, story and controls.

Fans, however, embraced Frontiers as a return to the days of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast, earning it a solid 8.2 on Metacritic. They praised the level design for feeling like a Sonic-themed playground where they could make their own fun, appreciated the story that came just short of taking itself too seriously - a major problem with recent Sonic games - and even found the controls to be superb.

One thing's for sure: SEGA is primed for a real hit if they pull off a sequel.
