10 Biggest Video Game Botches Of 2021
2. Balan Wonderworld's Story
Prior to its release in March, Balan Wonderworld was one of the most highly-anticipated indie games for the year. With Yuji Naka, the former head of Sonic Team at SEGA, at the helm as the game's director, big things were expected for a game that looked like it was ready to bring something new to the gaming world.
However, what followed was the release of probably the most universally slated title of the year, with the platforming gameplay in Balan Wonderworld being some of the most awkward and frustrating, and the bulk of the game's storyline is told in an e-book players had to buy separately.
Naka had described Balan Wonderworld as his 'one chance' at making a blockbuster platformer for developers Square Enix, but it's clear he fell well short in delivering a game that will stick memorably in the minds of most gamers. Naka would resign from Square Enix at the end of April this year and, whilst he hasn't explicitly given the number one reason behind his departure, it hasn't taken Sherlock-levels of deduction for gamers to guess what the chief cause might have been.
