10 Biggest Video Game Hoaxes

2. The Majora's Mask HD Remake Trailer

As much as we love them, Nintendo do like to toy with our emotions. At this year's E3 event that made reference to an English translation for cult RPG Mother 3, something fans have been clamouring after for years, without any actual confirmation they'd be working on it. Same for another entry in the beloved Starfox series. They did give us some early looks at the new Zelda and Smash Bros games, which just about made up for it, but many of us still cling onto the company's storied past. So when a teaser trailer for an updated, graphically overhauled edition of Majora's Mask - one of the best entries in the Legend Of Zelda - before E3 a couple of years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P50d9xsLzB0 Having all watched the video a zillion times and waiting with bated breath for an official announcement of this WiiU remake of one of our favourite games of all time, Nintendo's keynote speech at E3 2012 contained nothing of the sort. The teaser featured a very convincing recreation of the traumatic opening scene of Majora's Mask, where Link gets turned into a diminutive Deku shrub and is separated from his horse Epona by the nefarious Skull Kid. Nearly everything was dead on, from the sound effects to the main menu animation at the beginning. The music was all wrong, however, which should've been a tip off. As should the fact that the trailer debuted online during E3, before Nintendo had made any sort of announcement at the expo itself, and then their failure to mention any WiiU re-release for the game cinched it. Turns out it was put together by game designer Pablo Belmonte and Paco Martinez as a proof-of-concept to Nintendo, hoping they might do a remake. Which they didn't. And still haven't.
