10 Biggest Video Game Surprises Of 2022 (So Far)
1. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Picking the fire starter, beating all eight gyms, becoming the champion, and catching them all; this is the formula Pokemon games have followed for the last 25 years. However, against all odds, Game Freak made a new Pokemon game that has become one of the definitive titles in the series.
When it was first announced, Legends: Arceus seemed like the first genuinely ambitious Pokemon game since the original in 1996, but skepticism was at an all-time high. The graphics looked unpolished, the map looked bland, and the overall game seemed far from finished.
Even at release, the criticisms from the trailer were still there, particularly with its graphics. However, the amount of great mechanics this game brought is genuinely remarkable.
Taking elements from both Breath of the Wild and Monster Hunter, Pokemon Legends: Arceus reinvents the Pokemon formula in a way never seen before, breathing life into a world and creating something unique, especially for Pokemon.
While it has its rough edges, it's still a solid experience and one of the year's best games. Let’s hope that Scarlet and Violet live up to the same potential.
