Nintendo have been losing this generation's console war - badly. Like, shockingly badly - it seems that with your average gamer being around the 35 mark, simply replying on nostalgia for so long just can't sustain a worthwhile platform or business model. There are only so many times you can make Mario hop through a 2D landscape or play yet another frenetically "So over the top I don't know what I'm doing" game of Super Smash Bros. - and it's about time they got back to creating phenomenal original IPs. In addition to the real world fallout and cultural reception, Nintendo seem to not have any idea how to capitalise on what was the console equivalent of a funny viral video; a gimmick-turned-cultural revolution that lasted longer than most. At the end of the day no one wants to sit on their couch and actively rely on motion controls to get through an experience - and can you honestly say anything that came off the Wii or Wii U holds a candle to the likes of Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye, Super Mario Sunshine, etc.? Nintendo need to ditch the motion control side of things, let the 'filthy casuals' (as they're known... but not really) stick to the original Wii they bought a decade ago, and get to focussing on the people that've sustained them in the first place.
