10 Boss Fights That Stopped Video Games Being Perfect

3. Necron - Final Fantasy IX

Resident evil 3 nemesis
Square Enix

The feather-haired sorcerer, Kuja, serves as the antagonist of Final Fantasy IX. The insidious genome hopes to seize control of a great power and use it to rule all of Gaia. It's not a particularly original evil plan but it's what you expect at this point in the series.

But after defeating Kuja, our hero, Zidane, learns there's ANOTHER villain called Necron who's been behind everything this whole time.

Now, bait-and-switches are a common trope in FF. Not only that, they usually work if handled properly.

But this last-minute switcheroo comes out nowhere. It's so out of left field, the player didn't know Necron's name or what he looked like until five seconds before he attacks you.

Weirdly, this change-up would've been fine if the developers stuck with the original plan. Until the last minute, the final boss was meant to be Hades (who was eventually reassigned as a secret superboss). Since Hades is mentioned in the opening, his reveal as the true big bad wouldn't have come across as arbitrary.

You could forgive FFIX a little if Necron was an interesting foe. But considering his motivation is to destroy all of existence, there's nothing appealing about him, save for his cool design.
