9. Aunt May - Marvel’s Spider-Man

Insomniac Games’ stellar Marvel’s Spider-Man is a rollicking ride from start to finish. The relentless, high-octane, acrobatic combat, the expansive playground of New York City, the feeling of actually being Spider-Man… so few licensed titles managed to pull this off.

Not only is the game one of the best superhero titles since the Arkham series, it also pulls absolutely no punches when it comes to emotional moments. Nailing the action and combat is enough of a feat in itself, but capturing the devastating and very human side of being a superhero too? That’s truly remarkable.

As players will know, Otto Octavius’s gradual transformation into Doc Ock was as inevitable as it was tragic to witness. This goes twice for the boss battle with him, which would have made this list in a heartbeat if Spidey had actually killed Ock.

Instead, the mentor-turned-villain is taken away by the police, leaving poor Aunt May to lose her life in perhaps even more crushing circumstances.

After the battle, Peter has to make the choice between saving Aunt May (stricken by Devil’s Breath) with the limited antidote he recovered or creating a vaccine for everybody. Opting for the latter, he watches his beloved Aunt die, but not before her final revelation: she knows his secret identity and she’s proud of her Spider-Man.
