There’s no shortage of tragic backstories, boss fights and tormented NPCs in the Soulsborne games. FromSoftware just seem to revel in relentlessly pounding fans squarely in the feels.
Bloodborne is perhaps their darkest, most gothic and outright saddest effort to date, so it was quite hard to pick the death that hit fans hardest. While Gehrman doesn’t always meet a grim end (it depends on the ending you choose), the boss battle with him and his surrounding lore is just beyond harrowing.
Gehrman is one of very few ‘friendly’ NPCs in the game, a sort of mentor for Hunters who gives the player subtle prods as to where to go next. If the player delves into the game’s lore (as they always have to in these mysterious games), they learn that he’s bound to the dream too, trapped there in a similar manner to the Hunters themselves.
In one rare piece of dialogue, the Hunter even hears him crying, begging to be freed from the endless night. At the close of the game, however, he offers to ‘execute’ the Hunter, releasing them from their bounds and, effectively, trapping himself for even longer out of mercy.
If the player refuses, a boss battle against Gehrman, The First Hunter ensues. It’s quite a battle against a worthy warrior with similar capabilities to the protagonist, and when he finally falls, gamers are filled with a great regret to temper their triumph.
