Development miracles take time - that's for sure. It took another 5 years for Skyward Sword to hit the Wii, then another 6 for Breath of the Wild to hit Wii U and Switch. Are we going to have to wait that long for the next big Zelda?

Job listings suggesting Nintendo were hiring for the next 3D Zelda were posted by guru-guru to the Resetera forums in late 2018. It wasn't a dead cert that the job ads were Zelda, but major gaming news sites ran with it:

Why wouldn't Nintendo crack on with a sequel to the best-selling Zelda game, ever?

Critical acclaim for Breath of the Wild almost matched and sometimes exceeded Ocarina of Time. Sales are almost 12 million. Some are wondering why Nintendo couldn't have "done a Majora" and fast-tracked development of the next Zelda in less than 12 months. Their GDC presentation in 2017 showed there were plenty of ideas in the pot for the series: UFO abduction, anyone?

Announcing a new Zelda makes sense given that the major first-party titles from Nintendo this year are thinning out somewhat: There are still no firm release dates for Luigi's Mansion 3 or the next Pokemon - both due to arrive this year - and hardcore fans can't live on Mario titles alone: New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Yoshi's Crafted World and Super Mario Maker 2 might not be enough for 2019.
