Look, I know you probably don't want to remember Assassin's Creed 3. It, well...it wasn't very good, was it?

Remember the bait and switch at the start where you played as Templar Haytham Kenway? If you've played Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, you'll also know Haytham is the son of Edward Kenway, pirate and member of the Assassins. So how on earth did Haytham end up as a Templar?

The tie-in novel to AC3, Assassin's Creed: Forsaken, has the answers.

Told from the perspective of Haytham through his journals, the novel reveals that Edward Kenway was killed around Haytham's tenth birthday. Despite being in the Assassin's order, Edward knew of a Templar named Birch who he shared mutual respect with.

During Haytham's tenth birthday, Edward is killed. Birch then takes the Haytham under his wing, with Haytham having no idea that Birch is in fact a member of the Templar order.

Fuelled by a desire for revenge, and to rescue his missing sister, Haytham is slowly made into a Templar.

The novel then further expands upon what happened to Haytham in the build-up to Assassin's Creed 3, before actually going through the story beats of the game but from Haytham's perspective.
