The Legend of Zelda is a sprawling series filled with countless games to enjoy (minus Zelda 2 - ignore that one), but understanding the series' timeline is very difficult.

Most games in the series are usually set in its own self-contained universe (with some exceptions like Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask). The games are even set in completely different time periods, spanning history itself.

This timeline has long been a debate amongst Zelda fans. With every new game, everyone wonders just where it slots into the timeline.

Finally, after years of waiting, the answers came in the extensive Hyrule Historia book which was initially released in Japan in 2001. Inside the book, the people behind the series gifted us with a Zelda timeline, finally giving context to the series as a whole.

It all begins with Skyward Sword, which is currently still the very first game chronologically in the timeline. Although yet to be confirmed, most believe the most recent in the timeline is Breath of the Wild due to its post-apocalyptic nature.

Funnily enough, the timeline actually has branching paths depending on what happened to Link at the time, implying that there may be a multiverse of Zelda.
