10 Confusing Trends The Gaming Industry Is Convinced You Like

8. Sponsored Content

The gaming community is under no delusion that the industry is anything more than a business. Yes, artistry is important, but the industry's goal is to make enough money to produce more games and thus make more money; that's just how it works. As such, plenty of gamers are willing to accept it when developers sneak sponsored content into their products to make some extra cash, so long as it's not too distracting.

Of course, there are plenty of companies who throw that "not too distracting" philosophy by the wayside and integrate sponsored content into their games, assuming the reaction will be more "Wow, I know that brand, how exciting" than "Why am I being advertised to right now?" A particularly cringe-worthy example of this is the appearance of Jake from State Farm in multiple 2K NBA games. To be clear, if you get genuinely excited when meeting a walking advertisement in a game you've already paid for, then you need to get a grip.

If you need to put sponsored content or ads in your game, go ahead. But to expect players to get excited about it is beyond silly.
