10 Most Controversial Gaming Moments Of 2014 (So Far)

4. Facebook Buys Oculus VR

The Oculus Rift is one of the best pieces of evidence that virtual reality is not just feasible, but available in the here and now. It started out as a grassroots campaign, raising just under two-and-a-half million in a highly successful KickStarter campaign. Backers were impressed with Oculus' device, which allows for almost unprecedented immersion in virtual environments. However, they were less impressed when it was announced that Facebook purchased their company for $2 billion. Oculus inventor Palmer Lucky claimed that Facebook had intentions aligned with their own, but many early supporters felt cheated and unappreciated by the move that saw the company being purchased before the final product had even been released. Lucky believes that the partnership with Facebook will "accelerate" their vision, and we're sure this injection of cash, along with the resources at Facebook's disposal, will result in a potentially better initial project. Despite these practicalities, we can't help but feel a little sad that virtual reality has already been dominated by the big guys before it's even begun.
