10 Criminally Underrated Video Games That Deserve A Second Chance
4. Salt And Sanctuary
Why it got overlooked:
The side-scrolling 2D-platform style can be a hard sell to the mass market in an age of realistic 3D-brawling, RPGs.
Furthermore, the necessary comparisons to Dark Souls is often described as blatant copying, and that in itself could have been enough to put people off.
Why it deserves a second chance:
The reason Salt and Sanctuary copied so much of Dark Souls is because of how much Dark Souls gets right. While it converts the game into a 2D-platformer, it successfully maintains the creepy, Gothic atmosphere, the dangerous enemies and the challenging bosses, all of which will test your skills but deliver the familiar sense of elation when you finally conquer a tough quest – which in this game, is all of them.
It offers opportunities for co-op, replayability through the multiple classes and customisation options, and at least 20 hours of gameplay per playthrough. A cross between Dark Souls and the old Castlevania series, Salt and Sanctuary brings the fear and intrigue back to side-scrolling RPGs.
