Despite being presented as a dating sim, Doki Doki Literature Club! is a psychological horror title. Due to its Mature rating, players should be wary the light-hearted vibes the game is giving off early on are an elaborate sham. Nevertheless, it's impossible not to be blindsided by Doki Doki's first truly WTF sequence.

The story begins with your bubbly friend, Sayori, inviting you to her friends' book club. Her cheerful nature makes her seem emotionally resilient, creating a false sense of security. When Sayori admits she's suffering from depression, players will be incentivised to answer her questions with positive answers, hoping to make her feel better.

When Sayori is absent from school, you automatically head to her home to check on her. As you open the door, there's an instant cut of the bedroom, with Sayori hanging dead from a noose. What's worse is her hands are bloodied, indicating Sayori tried to free herself in her final moments.

Many players didn't just experience horror during this reveal but helplessness, since they believed they showed Sayori enough support to prevent this terrible fate. But no matter what you say to Sayori, it's impossible to save her.

Even if you knew Doki Doki wasn't as pure as it appeared, Sayori's death is still tragic. And if you genuinely thought Doki Doki Literature Club! was an innocuous happy-go-lucky title, it's very possible you'll never recover from this moment.
