2. White Phosphorous - Spec Ops: The Line

Rather than glorifying war like other military shooters, Spec Ops: The Line repeatedly demonstrates how nothing in war is black-and-white. Not only do the most pure-hearted soldiers perform abhorrent tasks, they're forced to acknowledge the ramifications of their actions.

Although Yager Entertainment's war-torn title has many moments like this, nothing hits on the same level as Chapter 8. Walker's unit find themselves boxed in during a mission, compelling them to unleash white phosphorous on the enemy, incinerating their flesh down to the bone. This course of action is harsh, but it feels necessary for the heroes to fulfil their duties.

But after advancing ahead, Walker sees the victims of the phosphorous attack were civilians. Rather than gleaning the situation subtly and briefly, you see the corpses up close, giving players a front-row seat to the pointless atrocity they committed. Even though you've taken many lives up until now, nobody is ready to see the charred remains of a mother cradling her dead child.

Despite the fact this sequence could've been pure shock-value, it has a direct impact on the overarching narrative. Walker is unable to forgive himself for what he did, causing him to have a psychotic breakdown, which drastically alters the plot until the very end.
