10 Darkest Bad Endings In Video Games

9. Something Ends, Something Begins III (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)

Playing through The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is both a deep pleasure and a draining nightmare. Sure, it's fun as all hell to play as Geralt of Rivia, chasing Leshen and Bruxas with your silver sword. But the White Wolf's story is also one of tragedy and struggle, which feels all the more poignant with this downer ending.

This epilogue occurs if Ciri dies when ending the White Frost. Geralt, stricken with grief (and a healthy dose of guilt), journeys to Crookback Bog to confront the only surviving Crone, the Weavess, who has stolen his dead daughter's medallion. After beating her to a pulp and getting it back, Geralt is consumed by despair, awaiting in the hut as the beasties he's hunted the whole game now come for him.

His fate is left ambiguous, but given that this is the only ending that doesn't feature epilogue cards for him, it's pretty clear that he doesn't come out alive.

Well, that's absolutely heartbreaking. But, you've no one to blame but yourself if you get this wholly melancholic ending, as it only triggers if you choose to admonish Ciri in a selection of pivotal moments. Maybe try being nice to your adoptive daughter next time - you big jerk.
