2. James/'Dad' - Fallout 3
Fallout 3's primary storyline revolves around players taking control of one of the survivors from Vault 101, who then ventures out into the Capital Wasteland in an effort to locate their father and finish the work he had started.
Having gone missing from Vault 101, James' whereabouts and the nature of his work make for a compelling premise, and the moment where The Lone Wanderer and their father finally meet is certainly one of the highlight points in the game.
However, this reunion ends with a sudden and tragic demise. Having made their way into the Jefferson Memorial in Rivet City during the Waters of Life quest, the Enclave encircles the father and son duo. Urging his son to carry on his work, James floods the room he's in with radiation in an effort to prevent them from getting control of the progress he's made.
Depending on the karma between the duo and certain choices players make in the build-up to this moment, things can get pretty tear-jerking.
Not only does this valiant death eventually fail in its objective, but it's a tragic end to a relationship that had barely gotten going.
