Dark Souls is not especially known for its cast of upbeat and hope-driven characters, which is perhaps why Solaire of Astora has made such a splash with the game's community in the years since its release.

Regarded as an incredibly skilled warrior, Solaire can be found early on in the game standing on a promontory after the demon Taurus boss fight. He reveals he willingly became an undead being in order to discover a 'sun of his own'.

Solaire and his neverending rays of positivity can be summoned for boss fights as a player progresses through his questline, though sadly this will coincide with him gradually losing faith and then, in turn, his own sanity.

Whilst it is entirely possible to save Solaire from his grizzly end, not opening a certain door and wiping out the parasites in the Anor Londo Cathedral will see the character end up with a nasty-looking insect attached to his head.

Players have the option of putting this warrior out of his misery, by which point he will have finally claimed to have found his sun.
