3. Franchise Games Are Often A Nice Starting Point

We've already talked about Rock Band and there's little doubt that there the appeal of singing along with the Fab Four has many people playing such games that wouldn't entertain the notion of sitting in front of an XBox 360 or a PS3. But that doesn't mean that people need to race to get out the guitar controllers and mics if they want to find something that their girlfriends might find appealing. One of the things about games is that since they are often seen as a something that moves to other popular media trends, gaming publishers will gladly fall over themselves to get the rights to big budget movies, television shows, sport franchises and more. Are all of these games great? No. Are some of them quite terrible? God, yes (I'm talking about you Aliens: Colonial Marines). However, occasionally, there is a gem amongst them. Spider Man 2 was a great game based off a fairly average movie that allowed the player to swing from rooftop to rooftop in a fantastic sandbox environment ( think GTA but with webbing and tights ). The two Walking Dead games are also examples of stories based in other media making the leap to the gaming world with fairly good results- particularly with the Telltale Games point and clicker. In other words the right TV/film licensed games are out there to help legitimise gaming in the eyes of the more sceptical.
