10 Essential Indie Games Every Gamer Should Play

3. Inside (2016)

Brothers a tale of two sons
Playdead

Based in Copenhagen developer PlayDead's only previous title came in the from of the critically acclaimed Limbo, released back in 2010. Six years in the making expectations for this follow up were sky high, fortunately those expectations were met.

The game opens with a small boy awakening in ominous looking woods. You’ve no idea who he is or why he’s there with only a few background details offering any sort of clue as to what is happening. In fact the plot, which I won’t spoil here, is kept deliberately vague throughout with no direct storytelling. If you pay attention however you’ll gradually be able to piece together the intriguing details.

In terms of gameplay Inside retains the well crafted platforming of Limbo but with an increased emphasis on stealth, as well as the addition of cleverly constructed puzzles, the gameplay is a lot more varied than their debut title. New concepts and ideas are constantly introduced from start to finish meaning you can never predict what’s waiting around the next corner.

With its oppressively bleak atmosphere, that the excellent graphical style does a great job of conveying, entertaining is perhaps the wrong word to use when describing Inside but it is an undeniably memorable title.
