10 Essential Video Games You Can Beat In Under 3 HOURS
9. What Remains Of Edith Finch - 2 Hours
In this first-person adventure title, you play as the sole survivor of the Finch family - a 17-year-old called Edith. The narrative-focused saga is composed of several short stories, each exploring the death of each of her family members.
Because of the morbid premise, you might be expecting What Remains of Edith Finch to fit squarely into the horror genre. Although that's not the case, you get an overwhelming sense of melancholy while traversing around your derelict abode and learning of the events leading to your dynasty's collapse.
Rather than exploring each family member conventionally, the game obliterates established conventions by looking at each vignette in a different medium, style, aesthetic, and genre. (The gameplay in each episode also varies wildly.) By unfurling the plot in such a diverse manner, What Remains of Edith Finch never comes across as formulaic. And because we look at each Finch through a surreal perspective, many details aren't set in stone, allowing the player to draw their own conclusions.
You don't see these characters for long, but still feel like you know who them. The snippets we catch of each Finch allows us to be enraptured and enchanted, despite knowing their ultimate fate.
