Sindel from Mortal Kombat is one of the series' most beloved and controversial characters at the same time, and this largely has to do with her unexpected moral switch in Mortal Kombat XI.

Originally, Sindel was portrayed as Mortal Kombat's tragic heroine. She was the ruler of one of the realms invaded by Shao Khan, who, despite doing everything to resist him, is ultimately defeated and has to become the conqueror's unwilling servant in order to protect her daughter, Kitana.

In this version of the story, Sindel becomes a villain the moment she submits to Shao Khan and turns into his puppet for the greater good. However, ever since Mortal Kombat XI, Sindel's fall from grace was retconned into a different tale.

In the modern releases, Sindel is actually a villain from the very beginning, secretly collaborating with Shao Khan behind everyone's back so that the two of them can become an evil power couple.

Of course, some fans didn't take kindly to this change, as her old, unwilling transformation into a bad gal feels a lot more sympathetic.

Still, whether it's the new lore or old, the one consistent theme is that Sindel is no longer the hero she used to be.
