There's something about retro-styled indie titles that when properly done, they effectively emulate the perfect mix of simplicity and complexity in titles from the early days of gaming.

Octopath Traveler seeks to recreate fan's joyous memories of the early Final Fantasy titles with turn-based combat, a wide array of controllable characters, and graphics that mix 16-bit with HD polygonal environments. From the sounds of it, it'll do just that.

Announced back in 2017, OT is a old-school RPG centered around eight playable characters, each of which has their own unique place in the world. They're connected to one another, but have their own path to travel and story to tell. This component plays into their combat abilities as some may have a helpful perk that other characters lack. Character choice and careful selection of alliances plays a huge role as you must decide which companions are trustworthy and/or reliable.

There's even a massive demo currently available on the Nintendo Switch E-Shop that you can get your hands on, just in case you wanted something a bit more interactive than YouTube playthroughs. Developer Acquire has plenty of experience on their own, but with JRPG experts Square Enix serving as co-developers and OT's publisher, you can trust in its authenticity.

Octopath Traveler releases July 13th on the Nintendo Switch.
