Featuring a plot that derives its focus from developer Richard Rouse's lifelong obsession with cults, The Church in the Darkness is an action-adventure game built around a very open narrative. The story centres around ex-officer Vic as he tries to infiltrate the mysterious 'Freedom Town' colony to check on his sister's son.

The Church in the Darkness will feature procedurally generated settings, and each restart will alter the camp layout and the allegiances of the inhabitants. As the story unfolds through updates from Camp Leaders, players will have to infiltrate the tightly knit community and capitalise on any weaknesses as they attempt to avoid arousing suspicion and get the information they need.

Since he knew it was likely that big studios would shy away from this game because of its seemingly controversial subject matter, Rouse set Paranoid Productions up specifically to complete and publish this game. The result, we must hope, will be a truly un-compromised vision from a very passionate creator.
