10 Most Expensive Console Launch Prices

4. Sega Saturn/Philips CDi/PS4- $400

The Philips CDi arrived at the tail end of 1991 for the hefty sum of $400. The CDi (compact disc interactive) was basically a stripped down PC minus the monitor, hard drive, floppy drive, mouse and keyboard. The design was akin to a VHS player which automatically means it also looks like the Xbox One. Aimed to offer more than the cool CD player, the CDi was seen as a home gaming console, and was another commercial flop. Games available for the console in the Mario (Hotel Mario) and Zelda franchise (Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Zelda's Adventure) were not enough to save the overpriced machine from death. In truth they were horrible-horrible titles you wouldn't even want to rest your coffee cup on. Self improvement titles and board game adaptations were the early batch of games on offer before a host of slightly, and I mean slightly, better options became available. The CDi did manage to miraculously sit on store shelves until 1998 and is a guaranteed staple of any worst consoles of all time lists throughout the years. Inflation Price: $684 The Saturn was Sega's own 32bit machine that suffered from the popularity of the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 outside of Japan. Compared to the CDi it was better received despite an abysmal surprised launch in the USA that annoyed consumers and game developers who were not warned of the incoming console. Complaints that it was too complicated to develop for, a host of disappointing games and the signs were not good for the Saturn's future outside of Japan, which lead Sega to release the better received but similarly ill fated Dreamcast. Inflation Price: $611
