5. Atari 5200 - $330

Atari had a right to charge such a tall asking price in 1982; after all they dominated the gaming world with their previous bundle of sprite joy the Atari 2600. Plans didn't go as smoothly as expected as the 5200 flopped in every way imaginable and was discontinued after only two short years on release. The games on offer were meager upgrades of titles currently available on the 2600 which was never going to be a selling point for any customer at the time, with the control pad criticised for being unreliable in many circumstances. The 5200 ended up competing directly with the somewhat powerful Colecovision who had the distinct advantage of being cheaper, and being bundled with the hottest property in gaming at the time, Donkey Kong. The 5200 wasn't a patch on the older 2600 in terms of popularity but the follow up Atari 7600 performed slightly better before the introduction of their career ending Jaguar.
