10 Extreme Moments Where Video Game Fans Took Things Too Far
6. Fans get angry after DOTA 2's Halloween event went missing
DOTA 2 remains an immesenely popular online MOBA nearly eight years after its release and, like many Valve products, it gets into the festive spirit with a unique event or two on an annual basis.
Specifically, Diretide offers a yearly pick of new cosmetics items and game modes on time for the spookiest holiday of the year. In 2013 however, Valve chose not to hold the event with their reasoning being that a larger update was in the pipeline and therefore took higher priority that year.
While not as angry or hateful as other entries on this list, a portion of DOTA mega-fans were worked into an unnesesary panic, wondering where the event was. In this case, a minority of players were very much accustomed to the regular drip-feed of content updates and seasonal events. Any change to that threw them off-balance.
The fans took to Reddit and other sites to attack Valve, demanding to know why the changes to the game's traditional structure were not present. DOTA 2's community is already unforgiving and toxic to an extent, but getting angry over a missed Halloween event only made it worse.
Valve, always careful around their players, addressed the concerns and promised that next year, things would be more consistent.
